OCULISTICA al J|medical

OPHTHALMOLOGY at J|medical

The eye is an organ as delicate as it is important in daily life. When problems affecting it arise, it is essential to consult a specialist in ophthalmology.

What does this specialisation involve? Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with conditions related to the eye, which in its functional component constitutes an extension of the central nervous system.

Does the ophthalmologist deal with both routine check-ups and eye-related conditions? Exactly. Both the prevention and treatment of ocular disorders fall within the remit of the ophthalmology specialist, who may in turn have further sub-specialisations depending on the segment of the eye involved or the age of the patients.

  • SERVICES AT J|medical
  • Ophthalmological consultation. This is a medical consultation with an ophthalmology specialist. The primary objective of the visit is to assess the health of the eyes and, where necessary, to detect any visual problems, eye diseases, or other conditions that could affect the quality of vision. It is a fundamental check-up for the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of ocular disorders.
  • Fundus oculi examination. This is an ophthalmological procedure consisting of the observation of the posterior segment of the eye (including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels), with the aim of achieving early diagnosis and correct management of any ocular problems. It is an examination that helps to preserve vision and prevent potential complications. It is performed using instruments (including the ophthalmoscope) that allow the specialist to detect ocular conditions such as retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other conditions that may affect visual health.
  • Corneal topography + corneal pachymetry. This is an advanced ophthalmological examination that uses an imaging device to map the surface and thickness of the cornea. This procedure provides a detailed view of corneal curvatures, revealing anomalies such as astigmatism, keratoconus, and other irregularities. Pachymetry measures corneal thickness, which is important for assessing the health of the eye and for monitoring the progression of corneal diseases.
  • Intraocular pressure measurement. This is the examination that allows assessment of the pressure inside the eye (known as intraocular pressure), to determine whether the intraocular pressure is too high or too low. This assessment enables the correct diagnosis and management of glaucoma and other ocular conditions related to intraocular pressure.
  • Orthoptic examination. This is a complement to the ophthalmological consultation. The examination is aimed at detecting any abnormalities of the neuromuscular apparatus that controls eye movement. This specific assessment has as its primary objective the identification of a targeted treatment, and is particularly indicated in the early years of life, as early diagnosis and the use of “ocular gymnastics” exercises can help prevent conditions in adulthood.
  • Outpatient surgery in the operating theatre. Within the J|medical centre, surgical procedures and ophthalmic interventions are also performed in a dedicated environment, without the need for prolonged hospitalisation. Patients are discharged on the same day as the procedure, thus allowing a rapid recovery and return to normality.
  • Correction of ptosis of the eyelid. This is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the abnormal drooping of one or both upper eyelids. The procedure seeks to restore the correct position of the eyelids in order to improve vision and aesthetic appearance.
  • Correction of palpebral dermatochalasis (blepharoplasty). When excess skin obstructs vision, surgical intervention is performed to improve both aesthetic appearance and visual function. The specialist removes excess skin and adipose tissue from the upper and/or lower eyelids.
  • Correction of entropion of the eyelid. In cases of irritation (or damage) to the eyes caused by friction between the eyelid and the eyelashes due to an incorrect rotation of the eyelid margin, a corrective procedure is performed on the eyelid so that it returns to its normal position, improving comfort and visual function. Correction of ectropion of the eyelid. Similarly, surgical intervention is carried out in cases of irritation caused by the eversion (i.e. the outward rotation) of the free margin of the lower eyelid, which loses contact with the eyeball. As the eye is no longer fully covered by the eyelid, it is affected by ocular dryness, causing considerable discomfort. The procedure restores the normal function of the eye.
