CARDIOLOGY AND CARDIAC SURGERY at J|medical
People with heart problems or high risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity, or a family history of heart disease should regularly consult a cardiologist to monitor their cardiac health.
What is a cardiology consultation? It is a (painless and non-invasive) assessment conducted by a cardiologist with the aim of identifying and treating any diseases of the cardiovascular system. During the consultation, the cardiologist evaluates the presence of symptoms that could stem from cardiovascular problems. The physician prescribes the necessary investigations and proposes appropriate treatments to address the situation.
How does the first cardiology consultation proceed? The cardiologist speaks with the patient, collects information on their state of health, their habits (such as whether they smoke), and the presence of cardiac conditions in the family, thereby obtaining a detailed medical history. They also enquire about the reason for the visit and the presence of any symptoms that led the patient to request the cardiology consultation. The physician examines and auscultates the heart with a stethoscope and measures the patient’s blood pressure. If deemed necessary, they may perform an electrocardiogram (ECG). The electrocardiogram is an examination used to identify cardiac conditions such as arrhythmias and fibrillation. During the electrocardiogram, electrodes are placed on the patient’s wrists, ankles, and chest. A machine called an electrocardiograph records the cardiac activity and converts it into a graphical tracing. This tracing provides the physician with the information needed to assess the state of health of the patient’s heart.
When is it appropriate to see a cardiologist? When symptoms attributable to the cardiovascular system are present — such as chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath even without exertion, swelling of the lower limbs, dizziness, or fainting — it is advisable to book a cardiology consultation.
- Can these symptoms be related to a cardiac condition? Yes. The assessment is naturally the cardiologist’s responsibility, but the symptoms listed could be associated with conditions such as:
- Heart failure
- Arrhythmias
- Valvular heart disease
- Endocarditis
- Myocardial infarction
- Pericarditis
- Deep vein thrombosis
Stroke
If the cardiologist prescribes diagnostic investigations, can these be carried out at J|medical? Yes. In addition to the cardiology consultation, several specific examinations can be performed at our centre.
