COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT) at J|medical

When the doctor needs to investigate areas of the body that cannot be evaluated with other methodologies, they may request the patient to undergo computed tomography (known as CT or CAT). This exam represents one of the most used tools in diagnostic imaging.

What is Computed Tomography? It is a medical imaging technique that provides volumetric acquisitions with reconstructions in different planes of space. Such volumetric acquisitions allow for visualizing all organs of the human body.

Why is it so important? Because it allows for identifying, in a timely manner, pathologies that would otherwise be difficult to diagnose. In the oncological field, for example, it allows for identifying neoplastic formations of a few millimeters. This allows the doctor to be able to intervene promptly.

How is J|medical structured to perform this exam? Inside the radiology department, a latest-generation CT is installed, capable of producing high-quality images with a contained radiation dose. Many CT exams are performed in basal conditions, i.e., without contrast.

To diagnose alterations of some anatomical structures, it is necessary (also in reference to the clinical question) to use an iodinated contrast medium.

• Articular CT. Exam that can possibly be performed with endo-articular contrast medium, defined as arthro-CT. CT represents a reference point for the study of bone tissue, being able to document even small structural alterations and microfractures.
• Internal CT. Exam indicated for the study of the neck, upper and lower abdomen, and chest. It uses intravenous contrast medium. It is an exam that allows for obtaining very detailed images on the conditions of organs such as liver, kidneys, lungs and for identifying numerous pathologies, including tumoral ones. Within internal CTs, we can find:

Virtual colonoscopy: it is a valid alternative to colonoscopy, being less invasive, which uses 3D computer reconstruction of computed tomography images. Angio-CT: allows for studying blood circulation in vessels and arteries and blood supply to organs. It is able to highlight any anomalies that could facilitate the onset of pathologies affecting the vascular system. Angio-CT is performed with contrast medium. This exam also includes Coronary CT. It is a very sophisticated method for evaluating the condition of the coronary arteries. It is often an indispensable exam to assess the need for surgical interventions. Neurological CT. Includes Brain or Head CT (both basal and with contrast) and Spine CT. Brain CT is able to evaluate ischemic or tumoral pathologies, while spinal CT is indicated for the study of vertebral bone alterations as well as nerve roots.
